Imperviously dark cherry red. Directly after opening some sauerkraut notes which evaporate quickly. Then sour cherries. Or better dark choccolate filled with sour cherries. On the palate tart, some bitter notes. These are not the tannins. Something different I can't recognize. Perhaps resin? Mmh. Let's wait.
The next day. Very closed, slightly resinous aromas with the sour cherries more in the background. Earthy. The taste is now more fruity but still with the resins lying somewhere under the carpet. Never tasted something like this. Mmh. Let's wait. Again.
The third day. The big surprise. Now totally balanced aromas. Sour cherries, black chocolate, a little bit chili and black tea. I would say "warm smell" - if anyone understands what I mean. Extremely fruity, full bodied with a lot of spices far at the end of the very long finish. Crazy, really crazy.
This second wine of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte is not an easy drinking wine. You can drink it now and it will provide a lot of fun - after minimum eight hours decanting. Then this is the wine for Christmas Eve when all visitors have left. Sit down in your arm chair, pick up the bottle you decanted hours before and hid. Raise your glass and say: "Merry Christmas" - and this is the truth.
Food pairing? Difficult. I would simply enjoy one or two pieces of medium-dark chocolate. As I said after hours of decanting you can drink the Le Petit. You can also wait another five years. Less decanting, but the style will not change I could bet.

Medium deep cherry red. At the beginning some vegetable notes. Needs lot of air. Then the nose - slowly - transfers to perfume and flower notes. Finally the fruit aromas arise. Blackberries, cherries falling down from the trees to the meadows, a little bit of smoked ham. Animalistic and wild. Totally contrary on the palate. By far not as aggressive as induced by the smell. Charming, harmonic, with present but wonderfully integrated tannins. Opulent with very long finish and very, very sexy. Already well drinkable - after minimum one hour decanting.
The next (two) days. Aromas now have changing completely. Vegatable aromas totally gone. Only black fruits paired with a little bit of licorice and cold cigar smoke. Pure eroticism. And on the palate? Mercilessly velvety and never ending. Thanks, MH, to recommend this wonderful beauty. So my recommendation with one hour decanting was wrong. Four hours minimum at the moment. But with this constraint the wine provides infinite joy already now and for the next three years. After that changing but on high level. Total lifetime? 15 years minimum. Wine food pairing? Beef Stroganoff! A dream!

2012 Les Hauts De Pontet-Canet (92/100)
Vin De France
14.0 % Alcohol
Tasted 2015-08-20 & 2015-08-21
Deep dark and bright cherry red. Extreme black cherry aromas paired with a touch of licorice and very dark rose petals. In addition a fleshy note which adds to this decadent (in positive sense) smell an animalistic character. On the palate an insane blackberry flash with a terrific smooth and long finish. That's brave, crazy and awesome.
The "Les Hauts De Pontet-Canet" is the second wine of the Pauillac winery Château Pontet-Canet. For the AOC Pauillac an independent company named "Qualisud" is assigned to check the wines of the AOC for instance for "typicality" of the AOC. These checks are done by a jury of five independent experts who are not be paid for this activity. For the 2012 "Les Hauts De Pontet-Canet" this jury stated that the wine does not follow the Pauillac rules for typicality. As a consequence the Château is not allowed to sell the wine with the remark AOC Pauillac on the label. It needed to be declassified to "Vin De France".
Hm. During a California wine tasting I offered this wine as a pirate blind to a friend. He immediately recognized that this must be a Bordeaux wine. And I could bet if I had not told him that at this moment where the wine comes from he would also have recognized the Left Bank family or even more. And again it is allowed to ask if such a jury makes sense or not.
However it is definitely correct that is different to other Pauillac wines in terms of the addressed audience. You can and you should drink it young. At the moment this wine offers such extreme hedonistic joy that it would be shame to avoid this. On the other hand the quality of the Pontet-Canet premium was raised so dramatically in the last decade, accompanied by a tremendous aging potential, that it would be interesting to keep track of this development. I have to think about this - and perhaps buy more:-).
At the moment I would pair it with French breast of duck with port wine sauce.

2007 Angelo Gaja Barbaresco (95/100)
Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
Alcohol 14.5 %
Tasted 2015-08-01
Dark medium ruby red with some garnet red rims. Classical Piedmont nose: Ripe red fruits, tobacco, dry Cinzano, wood herbs. Extremely fruity and wonderfully fresh. The fruits are dominating and glide smoothly to the very long end. This wine has no edges and flaws. It's a charmer. After two hours the characteristic is changing. More and more the wine opens up. The herb notes are now perfectly integrated into the fruit aromas. Extraordinary! There is nothing, nothing from the typical tannin dominated Piedmont hardness and severity. It fills the complete mouth with a silky but still fresh harmony.
The 2007 vintage is listed as very good but not outstanding. The summer was very hot and there was a lot of dryness. Similar to 2006, but in this year September rains led to a very great vintage. So if you are looking for a long-living Gaja Barbaresco take the 2006. I prefer the 2007. Very rarely I drunk a wine more balanced than this one. Gaja wines are too expensive? Perhaps. This bottle provided me with joy and awe in parallel. What better you can say about a wine?
At the moment absolutely perfect to drink - after two hours decanting. But I believe it is still not on the top. Perhaps in five years. Total lifetime? 20+. And a better partner for Vitello tonnato is very difficult to find.
A milestone in my wine history.

Medium to deep cherry red. The scent is warm and sensual. Blueberries, dark cherries, a touch of bourbon vanilla and a wonderful smooth cedar aroma. In terms of taste the wine is fruit oriented. The tannins are perfectly integrated; the sensuality promised by the aromas is confirmed on the palate. This wine is absolutely on the top. Don´t wait any longer. It will be still good in one, five or even ten years, but it is very rare that you have an opportunity to drink a wine on the peak.
This great experience confirmed my opinion that the Bordeaux vintage 2007 is underestimated. Of course the vintage was too pricy in subscription. But during the last years there was a significant price reduction for the whole vintage. I drunk the Léoville-Poyferré from the same vintage some months ago and it was outstanding, too. If you are looking for Bordeaux wines perfectly to drink now for a reasonable price, 2007 is your vintage.
Pair this silent beauty with a mild meat dish. Perhaps carefully prepared grilled quails?

Extremely deep and dark cherry red. An explosive mixture of cold tobacco, green tea and dark chocolate paired with dark cherries. On the palate the green tea and the tobacco are dominating, Very fleshy and sexy. A Christmas wine! Very, very long.
This wine was a present of my very good friend Mr J. Even if it's of course just at its beginning, the wine offers already a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a little bit chilled with my family on a summer afternoon as part of a salmon barbecue. Extremely good. But of course the perfect pairing - in its current conditon - would be a goose dish in Christmas time. Also some heavy cheeses would be very good partners for this outstanding Argentinian beauty.
This wine will have a very long life of 15 years or more.

Medium to deep dark cherry red. Some light rims. Chocolate aromas are dominating. Truffles, chocolate cake with some spices. In German we say "Gewuerzkuchen". But not the sweet Christmas Cake variant with dry fruits. More the puristic version - only the spiced cake perhaps with a thin dark chocolate icing. In addition, far behind the different chocolate aromas hints of juniper wood smoked bacon can be found.
On the palate the spices come out on the top. Due to the youthness of the wine still a little bit aggressive with a hint of bitterness in the long finish. Of couse very good, but perhaps a little bit overambitious. However the wine is just at the beginning. Wait for another two years and then we will see. The potential is there.
In the current condition I would pair it with a hearty stew.

Light, medium ruby red. Classical nose of a ripe Brunello: A mix of several spices paired with ripe berries, cold tobacco smoke and wet wood. On the palate also very classical. The fruit notes are dominating with a touch of bitterness. Slowly the bitterness disappears, before the spices take over. Medium-long finish.
The wine is already a little bit over the top, but still very well drinkable. When I drank this wine it came to my mind that some nice truffles would be great. So if you have a chance to get some high-class truffles from the Piedmont region, this Brunello would be a avery good alternative if you like from wine perspective more the Tuscany direction.

Medium and clear purple red. Intensive aromas of berries, wet forest floor and some crème de cassis. At the very first begin of maturity, but it provides already now a lot of pleasure. On the palate very fruity with a touch of hazelnut spread. Tannins still present, but very well integrated. Charming.
Minimum three hours decanting in the present condition. This phase will hold another three years. Then the wine will be more accessible. After that another ten years pure joy. Currently for me the classical partner for strong cheese. Wonderful.

Deep, dark cherry red. Some light rims. Big and heavy in the glass; long-living tears. Intensive aromas of ripe blackberries, chocolate, some tar and leather. Associations of a walk through a dark forest in winter time. On the palate extremely fruity with some fresh mint-like elements in the very long finish. The high alcohol is perfectly integrated. Of course big flavour and fleshy, but with a wonderful lightness of being. Terrific!
We opened this bottle after a very stressful day and we paired it with a nice steak. This worked very well, but I believe a classical roast venison would be better. The wine is extremely young. Another 10 years? Absolutely no problem.
Remark: I opened the bottle 7:40pm. One hour later the bottle was emptied...

Extremely dark cherry red, nearly inky. Aromas of tanned leather paired with ripe blackberries, licorice and wet soil. On the palate fruity and creamy. At the end of the very long finish traces of crème de cassis. Incredibly good.
Mr J - a very good friend and one of the heroes in my blog - offered me this bottle for a bargain price. I was not really convinced. Wines from Spain do not belong to my favorites. But this one was absolutely stunning. Together with a friend of mine we checked out for a nice bottle for a blu-ray evening. What shall I say? When the movie was finished the bottle was emptied. Glorious.
The wine is - of course - on the top, but I believe it can hold the quality for another two years. Food pairing? Heavy tapas. What else!

A very good friend has a nice shop in Wurmberg near Pforzheim (Baden-Wuerttemberg) where he offers mainly whisky but also other specialities including wine. The wines he has on stock are mostly from the lower price level. During my last visit we discussed the idea to taste in intervals some of his wines. We both want to see how these wines will be ranked in the list of my favourite wines. I have to mention that usually I buy whisky, chocolates and fruit spread at his shop but not the wines.
For this first experience I bought his most expensive wine: A Primitivo di Manduria from Terre di Campo Sasso for 8.90 € (12.20 $). Terre di Campo Sasso is a joint project of some oenologists with vintners from Apulia and Sicily.
The wine has a dark cherry red colour with some lighter rims. The bouquet offers some balmy notes paired with blackberries but also earthy notes. On the palate at the beginning the balmy notes and the blackberries are also present (fancy combination) but with more air the blackberries become dominant. Surprisingly long finish. A real bargain!
The wine is on the top and should be drunk now. Perhaps it can be held one year more. Pair it with spicy meat dishes.
By the way: The name of my friend's shop is "Johann's Gschmacksach" (http://johanns-gschmacksach.de/).

Purple red with some light rims. Clear and tight. Typical Bordeaux nose of a still young wine: Animalic and wooden light barn aroma with dark cherries and berries in the background. With more air the dark cherries paired with some pepper notes more and more come to the foreground. The taste is black cherry dominated too, also in the aftertaste which is long reverberant. Very pleasant with no bitter notes. Well integrated alcohol. Pretty much better than expected due to the critics of the wine popes:-).
2007 is one of the three worst rated Bordeaux vintages in the third millennium's first decade (besides 2002 and 2004). This means that real bargains can be found. I drank wonderful bordeaux wines of the vintages 2002 and 2004 - especially from Pauillac, e.g., Montrose. This Batailley is not an outstanding but a good wine which can still be found for a fair price.

2005 Glaetzer Wines Godolphin 91/100
Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia
80% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon
Very clear but deep cherry red. The aroma seems to be faulty, so I decided to decant the wine for two hours and to pray. Both was successful . The faulty tone was completely gone. Intensive dark cherries with a wonderful balsamic tone. In the mouth full-bodied with still present tannins which are perfectly integrated. The finish – which was slightly bitter two hours ago – was now long and pleasant. This wine was one of the winners of the evening. Kudos to the Glaetzer Wines team!
2005 was the second vintage of the Godolphin and simultaneously the last one under this name. Due to a trademark issue the name had to be changed. New name since 2006 is Anaperenna – and the wine is still very successful.
The 2005 is absolutely on the top and will hold this amazing quality for another three years.
Fits perfectly to roasted lamb chops.
